Recent research suggests that mediation may provide a range of health benefits (possibly due to its stress-reducing effects). For instance, studies show that a regular meditation practice may help promote healthy sleep, protect against heart disease, enhance memory, aid in pain management, alleviate depression, and relieve anxiety.
How to Meditate
1) Find a quiet place where you can sit in a comfortable position.
2) Choose a word, sound, or phrase that's meaningful to you and that brings you calm. Examples include "peace" and "om."
3) Keeping your back straight, close your eyes, and relax.
4) Breathe in deeply and slowly, then speak your chosen word, sound, or phrase as you exhale. Try to make your exhalation longer than your inhalation. In addition, you should aim to breathe in through your nose and exhale through your mouth.
5) Continue repeating step #4 for the length of your meditation session.
6) When you are done meditating, sit for a moment and stand slowly when ready.
Although meditation is often practiced for spiritual purposes, the benefits of meditation also include greater physical and mental relaxation. Due to these calming effects, meditation is thought to protect against a number of stress-related health problems.
